SS1000 - 1000 miles in under 24 hours
On June 30, 2001 I completed my first documented 1000 mile day. I had never attempted this sort of mileage in a single day before. The route was Yorktown, VA to Savanah, GA and back. A very straightforward undertaking. I-64 to I-295 south, around Richmond to I-95 south. Then a straight shot to Savanah. Stop for gas and a bite of lunch, then back on the bike and home. 1102 miles and 19 hours later, and I had done it.

A friend and riding buddy decided he wanted to get his "Iron Butt" certificate, so on May 30, 2003, Dan Briddell and I took off on a big circle of Virginia, North and South Carolina. Dan rides a sport bike and the 1027 miles in 22 hours were a little tougher. But we both were in good shape when we arrived at our appointed finish, the annual Relay for Life event sponsored by the American Cancer Society. That gave me the idea to incorporate an Iron Butt ride into a fund raising endevour for the following year's Relay for Life.

BBG1500 - 1500 miles in under 24 hours
In 2004, I decided to step up a level of difficulty and attempt a Bun Bunner Gold ride. This requires riding 1500 miles or more in under 24 hours. Obviously a fairly big step up; 50% more miles in the same time. For this ride, I actually worked to 'get in shape', and I spent more time planning gas stops, and working to get the most miles between gas stops in order to minimize the time I wasn't moving. April 17, 2004 was the big day, and I was able to complete 1530 miles in 23.5 hours. This time I took the same route from Yorktown, around Richmond and then down I-95. However, instead of stopping in Savanah, I continued on the Jacksonville, Florida and then turned west onto I-10 almost to Tallahassee. Then turned around an retraced my route to Yorktown. In the process, I raised a little over $5000 for the American Cancer Society.

50cc - Coast to Coast in Under 50 Hrs
2006 brought the need for 1) A chance to raise more $$ for the Relay for Life 2) A bigger personal challenge So, I decided to attempt an Iron Butt 50cc. Coast to Coast in under 50 hours. I decided to not take the shortest route, but rather to layout a ride that I thought was achievable, but more than the minimum mileage. I selected Wrightsville Beach, NC as my starting point, and San Diego, CA as the end. Many of my family and friends were now convinced I was definately 'certifiable'. As it turns out, that may well be true, but I was able to complete the ride in the allotted time. In fact I was well under the max allowable time. 2593 miles in 47hrs 52 minutes. Over $12,000 raised for the American Cancer Society. On this ride I also completed an SS2000. That requires consecutive days of 1000 in each 24 hour period.

SS1000 #3
On May 19, 2007 I participated in the Seal 160 ride from Portsmouth, Virginia to Savannah, Georgia and back. Total miles 1018 in just under 18 hours. This was a group ride to commemorate the sacrifice of the 11 Navy Seals and 8 Army 160th Special Operations Aviators lost in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005. We rode for those 19. Also on this trip I met and rode with a group known as "Hoagie's Heros" from West Virginia. A great group of guys, whom I hope to ride with again.
